Abstract The transportation sector is a major contributor to both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Hybrid electric vehicles can reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by optimizing the energy management of the powertrain. The purpose of this study is to examine the trade-off between regulated pollutant emissions and hybrid powertrain efficiency. The thermal dynamics of the three-way catalyst are taken into account in order to optimize the light-off. This paper presents a preliminary design optimization study of a jet engine structure using a knowledge-based master modeling approach. The objective function is derived based on input-output relationships of a cost-performance model, where specific fuel consumption, pressure loss and direct cost are considered. The context of this work is space mechanics. More precisely, we aim at computing low thrust transfers in the Earth-Moon system modeled by the circular restricted three-body problem. The goal is to calculate the optimal steering of the spacecraft engine with respect to two optimization criteria: Final time and fuel consumption. The contributions of this thesis are of two kinds.
